WHO ARE OUR FAMILIES?

  • Stevenson PACT School families come from all sorts of backgrounds yet hold a shared philosophy about how important it is to the child to provide a developmental and innovative learning environment.
  • Stevenson PACT is a district-wide school that accepts inter-district transfers (based on space availability)
  • Approximately 60% are from the district at large and the remaining 40% come from outside the Mountain View-Whisman school district, including Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, and Cupertino.
  • Open to all families who support Stevenson PACT philosophy
  • All financial contributions are voluntary, although 100% participation is expected at whatever level you can afford.

A Stevenson PACT Family's Responsibilities

Being involved in the Stevenson PACT school generally includes classroom time, meetings and committees, and volunteer jobs. New PACT parents are often apprehensive about adding new responsibilites to their family life, but with them come great rewards. One PACT mother in her second year with the program says:

"I didn't know how I would do those 20 hours of school community support - it sounded like so much! Once I had done a few events I had a realization: my volunteer hours were dual purpose. While I worked, my kids were having a playdate with dozens of other children in a safe, supervised environment. They were absorbing the values of volunteering and cooperating, and they weren't asking for TV or computer time! No single family could give them what the Stevenson PACT community does."

Duties may be shared among family members, including extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) and friends. All contributions by caring adults (and mature teenagers) are most welcome!

Stevenson PACT Family Profile: Amy and Addison

Addison and Amy have a first-grader at Stevenson PACT. Amy worked in Marketing before having children, but decided to delay going back to work for a few more years while she volunteers in the classroom and leads the Publicity and Recruiting Committee at Stevenson PACT. She particularly loves to help the K/1 class with journal writing, and serves as her room's Class Coordinator. Addison, another Marketing professional, works full time but helps the Publicity and Recruiting Committee in the evenings. He always tries to volunteer at evening and weekend Stevenson PACT events, as that has been an important way for him to get to know the other Stevenson PACT parents and children. Their younger son is looking forward to starting kindergarten at Stevenson PACT next year.

Stevenson PACT Family Profile: Christopher and Kristina

Christopher and Kristina have a fifth-grader and second-grader in Stevenson PACT and each works full- time in Information Technology. Christopher works the in-the-classroom shift each week, and serves as the Operations Representative for the classroom. He has also set up some experimental systems for internal communications and coordination. Kristina is on the publicity committee, leveraging her IT background to set up the website. Both have joined the new Technology committee. She helps with other non-school-hours projects, such as "handyman" tasks in the classroom, making party activities, and helping the Garden Committee. Their sons attend the YMCA program, which does art, games, and other activities until 6 pm. On-campus YMCA has not yet opened at the Stevenson PACT school, so the children ride the bus to the YMCA at Castro School, where they have many friends from last year.

Stevenson PACT Family Profile: Sandy and Bob

Sandy and Bob have three children. Their oldest child is a Stevenson PACT graduate and currently attends an independent middle school. Their middle child is a third grader at Stevenson PACT. And their youngest child attends a parent participation preschool but is looking forward to starting in Stevenson PACT kindergarten next year. Bob owns an engineering services company and is often tied up with his business but makes the time to manage a local baseball team. He also attends family Stevenson PACT social events and participates in Stevenson PACT work days to stay connected to the school community. Sandy made the decision to leave her Marketing Communications Management position to focus on the family and concentrate on their childrens" education. Over her seven-year association with Stevenson PACT School, Sandy has juggled a lot of different schedules. Because Stevenson PACT is such a tight knit community, she has been able to set-up carpools and trade babysitting time with other Stevenson PACT families so that she can fully participate in Stevenson PACT. Sandy has especially enjoyed teaching the Paper Arts class for Arts Focus. She currently plans the field trips for her daughter"s second/third grade classroom and tries to focus on outdoor education. Sandy coordinated the building of a tule reed hut during the class unit on Ohlone Indians and is teaching a unit on photography.
